APPROXIM. Probably not your kind of Jazz. Unconventional Jazz Experience The emergence of Approxim, like previous developments in modern music, is largely tied to the jazz experience. This idea can be seen in the approaches of the musicians themselves, who reveal directions that are more intellectual, less danceable and less marketable to the traditional audience. Approxim uses it's own idioms, and like free jazz it places an aesthetic premium on expressing the character or attitude of the musician, as opposed to the classical tradition in which the performer is seen more as expressing the individuality of the instrument. Approxim stays away from traditional techniques but elicits unconventional sounds from the instruments. Earlier music styles typically were built on a framework of song forms and compositions. In Approxim, the dependence on a fixed and pre-established form is eliminated, and the role of improvisation is correspondingly increased. A new approach to Jazz Approxim has developed Open Space Jazz as a concept for "Approximately One Hour" recordings. Radio and video broadcasts make an integral part of their public personae as artists. Approxim moves more unconventional than previous generations of jazz musicians. Approxim's principles will quickly be assimilated into musical developments in all corners of global society. Working together artistically and constructively on the one hand, while exchanging thoughts on essential themes informally on the other, creates a transparent, open structure in which musicians frequently surpass themselves and each other. Hidden powers and creative talents will germinate trend-setting innovations and bring about an unpredictable apotheosis, an euphoria none of the music makers and listeners could have expected beforehand. Collectively made music Open Space Jazz is a lively refuge where artists are invited in the Approxim Studio or an occasional location, to share musical ideas, opinions, talents, views and experiences. This leads to inspiring forms in which the enthusiasm, talent, know-how, perception and insight of all are the ingredients of commitment toward reaching a higher level collectively made music. Open Space Open Space Jazz is based on the principle of open space technology, in which optimal participation and commitment of the participants will be achieved by constantly giving time and space to immerse and express themselves in one hour of creative music. A transparently time frame with recognizable elements and challenging instruments enhances the significance of the results. During Open Space Jazz, all time and energy will be used to create an optimal performance in which the musicians are given all the space they need to rediscover themselves and their instrumentation in an informal situation. "Radio Approxim is one of the finest Open Space Jazz institutes of recent times." New answers to old questions Open Space Jazz is based on the principles of self-determination: participants put together their own programme through live sessions. Open Space has been used before at official work conferences and congresses of people who discuss what really concerns them in various simultaneous sessions. They explore new approaches and possibilities or try to formulate new answers to old questions. This is based on the principle that people are perfectly able themselves to develop and work out themes that are relevant to them, instead of experts pre-arranging this for them. Furthermore, Open Space is capable of bringing together people with various backgrounds to share visions, ideas, creativity and actions, resulting in a collective and motivating happening. Open Space includes the following aspects: - Observe processes of change. - Enhancing mutual trust. - Promoting self-determination. - Improving communication. - Creating support. - Developing mutual respect. - Stimulating creativity and innovation. Approximately one hour Open Space Jazz is the process in which a group of musicians put their enthusiasm and energy into a joint approach of a musical concept, ways of finding sounds and atmospheres, creating new techniques, and so on. The only rule is that the entire performance takes place in the time frame of approximately one hour. Everyone is given the opportunity to show their personal talents and gain new experiences. The ambiance is characterized by openness, commitment, shared responsibility and self-development, with room for dialogue and the exchange of experiences in an informal yet inspiring atmosphere. Interactivity On average, the happening takes about an hour, after which the pieces of work that has been recorded will be presented on Approxim Radio. If so desired, the work can be elucidated or commented upon by others, for instance via e-mail and Twitter. Listeners are explicitly asked to make live music simultaneously, while they are listening to the Radio Approxim.
